Lot 1132
The Shift Boss’ House was constructed between 1900 and 1920 and renovated by volunteers during the Adopt-A-Cottage programme in 1995/96.
The painted patterns on the hessian walls are of special interest and contribute to the character of the building, which is typical of the style, form and construction materials of buildings in the West Australian Goldfields.
The two-bedroomed cottage also features walls lined with pressed metal and ripple iron, and has a lounge and a large kitchen with a stove and basin. The roof is a single-gabled construction and the skillion (lean-to) along the front and rear is enclosed.
The Shift Boss’ House was threatened by the progress of the Western Waste Dump when open cut operations started and was substantially rebuilt in the centre of Lot 1132 between Manning and Tower streets during the relocation project funded by the Sons of Gwalia NL in the 1980s.
