Lookouts

Museum Precinct - Tower Street

There are two lookouts on the hill above Gwalia Ghost Town: one near the Assay building and the other opposite the transport shed near the entrance gate to the museum complex.

The lookouts provide good views of the open cut mine - 900 metres long, 750 metres wide and 300 metres deep. The open pit is a visible reminder of the Sons of Gwalia NL era, which commenced in the 1980s when new technology made the re-working and processing of low grade ore viable.

St Barbara Ltd purchased the mine in 2005 and current mining operations have exceeded 1,500 metres in the main underground decline, the Hoover Decline. The Gwalia operations continue to be profitable and produced 183,116 ounces of gold in the 2012/13 financial year.
