29. Headmaster's House

(Closed to the public. Please view from street.)
Lot 556 Johnson Street

A State school with an iron-clad classroom building was constructed in 1899 on the block located on the corner of Tower and Johnson streets.

The school site, comprising a block of Lots 553-560 on the corners of Otterburn, Johnson and Tower streets, was gazetted in 1906.

A house for the headmaster, was built on the corner of Otterburn and Johnson streets. The remains of the tennis courts are still partly visible in Otterburn Street next to the house.

Typical of the standard Government style buildings of the period, the house is the only remaining timber framed and weatherboard clad building in Gwalia.

The school did not reopen when the mine closed in 1963. The school buildings were removed, leaving only the headmaster’s house on Lot 556. The house was extensively damaged by a fire in the 1980s.
