24. VB & MM Mazza Store

(Closed to the public. Please view from street.)
Lot 518 & 519 Tower Street

In 1949 Victor Mazza purchased the general store, L.R. Crompton. The shop was a family affair, owned and managed by Victor and his wife Melda (Imelda Quarti). Mazza family members Dino and Harry (Jnr) served behind the counter and one of Victor’s brothers, Bob Mazza, did most of the deliveries.

The building was moved from Laverton to the Gwalia Block, a gazetted business area, in about 1910. In 1955 Victor had the store moved to its current location at Lot 518 and 519 Tower Street and changed the shop’s name to VB & MM Mazza.

VB & MM Mazza was the only operating store in Gwalia when the Co-Op closed in 1957. Victor moved to Perth in 1962 and Bob, Dino and Rene Mazza stayed to manage the shop.

The closure of the Sons of Gwalia Mine in December 1963 meant the business was no longer viable and VB & MM Mazza shut its doors permanently in early 1964.

Walk along the long verandah and peep though the big windows to get a glimpse of the layout of the shop. The bicycle that Bob Mazza used for deliveries and some items from the shop are on display, while banners tell the story of the Mazza family and the shop.
