17. De Rubeis Camp

Lot 1132

De Rubeis Camp was constructed circa 1920, with the first owner registered as G. Andreoletti and the building valued at £5 ($10).

G. De Rubeis owned the camp for 10 years from 1948/49 until 1958/59. The last owner of the camp was L. Tagliaferri, who lived there until 1960/61. Throughout this period, the value of the cottage remained constant at between £10 ($20) and £12 ($24).

The tiny cottage is lined with hessian and consists of only a bedroom featuring a trapdoor in the floor and a kitchen with a stove alcove.

De Rubeis Camp was among four cottages saved from demolition in 1987/88 by the Leonora Tourist Committee, with financial support from Sons of Gwalia NL, when open cut operations commenced in the early 1980s. The cottage is in the centre of Lot 1132 between Tower and Manning streets.

The cottages were dismantled and relocated from their original location south of the State Hotel on the Sons of Gwalia mine lease. De Rubeis Camp was substantially rebuilt and the earth floor of the kitchen was paved with bricks.

Conservation work to stabilise and prevent water damage to the De Rubeis Camp was completed on 28 November 2013. The work was funded by Lotterywest and the Shire of Leonora.
