16. Unnamed Camp

Lot 1132 Tower Street

The five-roomed cottage known as the Unnamed Camp is located between the T. Baletich and De Rubeis camps.

Built between 1900 and 1920, the cottage showcases the ingenuity of early Gwalia residents with its tree branch supports and is a representative example of the architectural improvisation of Gwalia miners’ accommodation built between 1898 and 1963.

The cottage features a low-pitched gable roof and skillion, while the floor is mainly a combination of timber floorboards and packing boards. Part of the floor was originally packed earth and is now paved with bricks.

This building was dismantled and rebuilt in 1985 when it was relocated during the expansion of the open cut mine and consequently is more random in its placement than most of the other camps.
